Abner defects to David and Joab kills him

As David's house grew stronger, Abner broke with Ish-bosheth and pledged to bring all Israel to David. David received him in peace, but Joab killed Abner in revenge for Asahel, and David publicly mourned the commander (2 Samuel 3:1-39).
