The Jerusalem council

The apostles and elders gathered over the circumcision question. Peter testified that God purified the Gentiles' hearts by faith, and James appealed to the prophets; they judged that salvation is through the grace of the Lord Jesus (Acts 15:1-21).

1Then some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” 2And after engaging these men in sharp debate, Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question. 3Sent on their way by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, recounting the conversion of the Gentiles and bringing great joy to all the brothers.

The fallen tent of David and the Gentiles

At the Jerusalem council, James says that the prophets agree with God's taking a people from the Gentiles and then quotes Amos's promise that David's fallen tent will be rebuilt.

Amos 9:11–12

“In that day I will restore the fallen tent of David. I will repair its gaps, restore its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old, that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear My name,” declares the LORD, who will do this.

Amos 9:11-12 promises the restoration of David's fallen tent and speaks of Edom and nations bearing the LORD's name. Acts 15:16-18 quotes the restored tent but reads that the remnant of mankind may seek the Lord, including Gentiles called by His name.
