Jesus begins proclaiming the kingdom in Galilee

After John was imprisoned, Jesus withdrew to Galilee and settled in Capernaum. He proclaimed that the time was fulfilled, the kingdom of God was near, and people should repent and believe the good news (Matthew 4:12-17; Mark 1:14-15).

Light dawns in Galilee

Matthew says that Jesus' move to Capernaum and ministry in Galilee fulfilled Isaiah's words about light dawning in Zebulun, Naphtali, and Galilee of the nations.

Isaiah 9:1–2

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those in distress. In the past He humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future He will honor the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations: The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.

Isaiah 9:1-2 names Zebulun, Naphtali, and Galilee of the nations and says that a great light has dawned; Matthew 4:14-16 quotes those words after saying that Jesus settled in Capernaum to fulfill what Isaiah had spoken.
