Jesus washes the disciples' feet

During supper Jesus laid aside His outer garments, washed the disciples' feet, and returned to the table. The Lord and Teacher had taken a servant's place, giving them an example to follow in serving one another (John 13:1-20).

1It was now just before the Passover Feast, and Jesus knew that His hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the very end. 2The evening meal was underway, and the devil had already put into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was returning to God.

The friend who shared bread

During the supper, Jesus quoted Psalm 41:9 about a trusted companion who shared bread and lifted his heel, saying that the Scripture would be fulfilled.

Psalms 41:9

Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.

Psalm 41:9 speaks of a close friend who shared the psalmist's bread and lifted his heel against him; John 13:18 quotes those words as Jesus distinguishes the betrayer from the disciples He had chosen.
