John sends messengers to Jesus

From prison John sent disciples to ask whether Jesus was the One who was to come. Jesus pointed them to what they had seen and heard, then told the crowd that John was more than a prophet, the messenger sent to prepare the way (Luke 7:18-35).

18Then John’s disciples informed him about all these things. 19So John called two of his disciples and sent them to ask the Lord, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?” 20When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?’”

The messenger sent ahead

Jesus identified John the Baptist as the promised messenger sent ahead to prepare the way, using wording drawn from Malachi.

Malachi 3:1

“Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple—the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight—see, He is coming,” says the LORD of Hosts.

Malachi 3:1 promises that God will send His messenger to prepare the way; in Matthew 11:10 Jesus uses the same promise and says that John is the one about whom it was written.
