The Levites numbered and set apart for the tabernacle

The Levites were taken in place of Israel's firstborn and assigned responsibility for the tabernacle. The Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites received distinct duties for carrying its holy furnishings and structure (Numbers 3:1-4:49).
