Moses flees to Midian

When Moses was forty, he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew and killed the Egyptian. The next day, a Hebrew rejected Moses and threatened to expose the killing. Moses became afraid and fled from Pharaoh to Midian (Exodus 2:11-15; Acts 7:23-29), in 1531 BC.

11One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people and observed their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. 12After looking this way and that and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand. 13The next day Moses went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you attacking your companion?”

Who made you ruler and judge?

Stephen repeats the words of the Israelite who rejected Moses as ruler and judge and threatened to expose his killing of the Egyptian.

Acts 7:26–29

The next day he came upon two Israelites who were fighting, and he tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why are you mistreating each other?’ But the man who was abusing his neighbor pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us? Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’ At this remark, Moses fled to the land of Midian, where he lived as a foreigner and had two sons.
