Moses recounts Israel's wilderness history

On the plains of Moab, Moses reviewed Israel's journey from Horeb, the refusal at Kadesh, the years in the wilderness, and victories east of the Jordan. He urged the people to remember the LORD's acts and obey His commands (Deuteronomy 1:1-4:43).

Our God is a consuming fire

Hebrews quotes Moses' warning that God is a consuming fire while calling its readers to worship Him with reverence and awe.

Hebrews 12:28–29

Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us be filled with gratitude, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe. “For our God is a consuming fire.”

Deuteronomy 4:23-24 warns Israel not to forget the covenant or make an idol because the LORD is a consuming fire and a jealous God; Hebrews 12:28-29 repeats the consuming-fire declaration after calling for grateful, reverent worship.
