Paul before the Sanhedrin

Before the Sanhedrin Paul declared that he was on trial for the hope of the resurrection, dividing the Pharisees and Sadducees. The dispute became so violent that soldiers carried him away; that night the Lord stood near and told him he must also testify in Rome (Acts 23:6-11).

30The next day the commander, wanting to learn the real reason Paul was accused by the Jews, released him and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul down and had him stand before them.

Quotation

Do not speak evil about your ruler

When Paul is challenged for insulting the high priest, he says that he was unaware of the man's office and quotes the command not to speak evil about the ruler of the people.

Exodus 22:28

You must not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.

Exodus 22:28 commands Israel not to blaspheme God or curse the people's ruler; Acts 23:4-5 records the challenge to Paul and introduces the ruler command with "it is written."
