Explicit fulfillment
David's words about the resurrection
Peter at Pentecost and Paul at Pisidian Antioch quote David's words that God's Holy One would not be abandoned to the grave or see decay, and both apply them to Jesus' resurrection.
Psalms 16:8–11
I have set the LORD always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will dwell securely. For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, nor will You let Your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand.
Psalm 16:8-11 expresses confidence that God will not abandon the psalmist to Sheol or let His Holy One see decay; Acts 2:25-32 says David foresaw and spoke about Christ's resurrection, and Acts 13:35-37 contrasts David's decay with the risen Jesus, who did not see decay.
Explicit fulfillment
The Son and David's promised heir
Paul says that God fulfilled His promise to the fathers by raising Jesus and quotes Psalm 2's declaration of the Son; Hebrews places that declaration beside God's covenant words about David's heir.
Psalms 2:7
I will proclaim the decree spoken to Me by the LORD: “You are My Son; today I have become Your Father.
2 Samuel 7:12–14
And when your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for My Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his Father, and he will be My son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.
Psalm 2:7 says, "You are My Son"; 2 Samuel 7:14 says of David's promised heir, "I will be his Father, and he will be My son"; Acts 13:32-33 names the promise fulfilled in Jesus' resurrection, and Hebrews 1:5 quotes both earlier statements in succession.
