Jesus answers temptation with Deuteronomy
In the wilderness, Jesus answered each temptation by quoting Deuteronomy: life depends on God's word, God must not be tested, and He alone must be worshiped and served.
Deuteronomy 8:3
He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna to eat, which neither you nor your fathers had known, so that you might understand that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Deuteronomy 6:16
Do not test the LORD your God as you tested Him at Massah.
Deuteronomy 6:13
Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths in His name.
Matthew 4:4 quotes Deuteronomy 8:3, Matthew 4:7 quotes Deuteronomy 6:16, and Matthew 4:10 quotes Deuteronomy 6:13. Luke 4:4, 8, and 12 records the same three answers.
