The man and woman disobey God

The serpent deceived the woman, and she and the man ate from the tree God had forbidden. Their eyes were opened, they knew they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together as coverings (Genesis 3:1-7). Scripture does not state how long after creation this occurred; Ussher placed it in the first year.

1Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’” 2The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden, 3but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’”

Paul compares false teaching in Corinth to the serpent's deception of Eve. He warns that their minds could be led away from devotion to Christ.

2 Corinthians 11:2–4

I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. For I promised you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ. I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may be led astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims a Jesus other than the One we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit than the One you received, or a different gospel than the one you accepted, you put up with it way too easily.

Genesis 3 records the serpent's words and Eve's statement that the serpent deceived her. Second Corinthians 11:3 names that deception and applies it as a warning to the Corinthian believers.
