Jesus teaches that the truth sets people free
Jesus told those who had believed Him that continuing in His word marks true disciples, who know the truth and are set free. He contrasted slavery to sin with the freedom the Son gives and called His hearers to listen to God's words (John 8:31-47).

31So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. 32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33“We are Abraham’s descendants,” they answered. “We have never been slaves to anyone. How can You say we will be set free?”
