At Rephidim the people quarreled with Moses because there was no water. At the LORD's command, Moses struck the rock at Horeb and water came out; he named the place Massah and Meribah because Israel tested the LORD (Exodus 17:1-7).
1Then the whole congregation of Israel left the Desert of Sin, moving from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. 2So the people contended with Moses, “Give us water to drink.” “Why do you contend with me?” Moses replied. “Why do you test the LORD?” 3But the people thirsted for water there, and they grumbled against Moses: “Why have you brought us out of Egypt—to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”
God gave Israel water from the rock in the wilderness. Paul says the spiritual Rock that went with them was Christ.
and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
Exodus 17 records water coming from the rock at Horeb. First Corinthians 10:4 recalls Israel's spiritual drink and says, "that rock was Christ."
